Homegoing Celebration and Thanksgiving for the Life of
George M Adams
Born July 13, 1926 -  Died May 28, 1997 at age 70
George M. Adams was born in Jefferson, Texas on July 13, 1926
to the late Reverend George H. Adams, Sr. and Mrs. Jessie B. McClendon-Adams.

His last forty years were spent at Mt. Olive Baptist Church where he served as Usher Board President, Sunday School Teacher, Church Treasurer, Chairman of Trustee Board, Deacon, and a number of other duties which he faithfully performed.

Mt. Olive Baptist Church presented him with the Senior Citizens Award in 1992
and named him Father of the Year in 1996.

He obtained his elementary and secondary education in Marion County school system. He received his B.A. Degree from Bishop College in Marshall, Texas, graduating with Honors. He went on to receive his Masters Degree from Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas. He served as sergeant in the United States Army during World War II until he was honorably discharged in 1947.  Click here to see US Veterans Gravesites record.

On December 19, 1948 Mr. Adams was united in marriage to Ms. Lena Epps
and they made Longview their permanent residence.
To this union, two children were born - Gregory and Kaye.

Mr. George Adams comes from a long line of educators, including both his parents.
He worked 33 years as an educator where he taught schools in Marion County
and Longview Independent School District until he retired in 1984.
He served as president of the Teachers Alliance Federal Credit Union for 24 years.
He was the recipient of a National Science Foundation Grant for educational research.
He was featured in Who's Who Of Texas Education
as well as the Bicentennial Edition ot Personalities of the South
in recognition of past achievements and outstanding service to community and state.
He was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association,
Texas Classroom Teachers Association,
National Education Association,
Retired Teachers Association,
and an honorary member of the Texas Parent Teachers Association.
Mr. Adams was a member of the Longview Police Department
Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association.
He was a member of Politics in Action
and he served as vice-president of the NAACP, Longview Chapter.
He participated in the NAACP Silent March in Washington, D.C. in 1989,
and was selected Democrat of the Year in 1991 by Gregg County Democrats.
Mr. Adams also worked with the Boy Scouts of America, Habitat for Humanity,
Mending Heart at Good Shepherd Medical Center, United Way,
and several other volunteer organizations.

His numerous honors, awards, and affiliations do not begin to define the core of Mr. George M. Adams. The real Mr. Adams was a dedicated family man. He adored his family and they adored him. He was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He tried to be a friend to everyone regardless of age, education or social status. A typical day for Mr. Adams included visiting the sick, shut-in, bereaved, elderly, and underprivileged. At his expense, he provided them with transportation and supplied them with groceries when needed. On a daily basis, he collected aluminum cans for the deaf and mute so that they might collect the proceeds from the recycled product. He constantly gave his time, money, love, encouragement, and prayers to anyone in need.  He was totally unselfish and modest - always doing the hard work behind the scenes - never a glutton for the limelight, glory or praise. His philosophy was "it's not the money you earn in this lifetime that counts, but it's the service you can render to humanity that matters." Indeed, he was a fierce Christian soldier who was dedicated to loving and serving God with all of his heart, soul and might.

He is survived by his loving wife Lena Adams of 48 years; his son Gregory C. Adams of Longview. Texas; his daughter Dr. Kaye Adams of Dallas, Texas; granddaughter Monica Kay Adams of Dallas, Texas; twin sister Alyce Chevalier of Longview, Texas; sister, Reta Sanders of Longview, Texas; sister. Rubye Williams of Marshall, Texas; brother George H. Adams, Jr. of Riverside, four sisters-in-law,  two brothers-in-law, a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends,
and his precious little dogs whom he loved dearly. Mr. Adams lived a life filled with generosity, compassion, and love
for his family and fellowman. His quick wit and warm smile will be missed by everyone who knew him, but he will always serve as an inspiration and guiding force in the lives of his family and friends.

TRIBUTE TO OUR DAD

We always felt that you loved us more than life itself.
Your unselfish sacrifices proved that,
and ensured that we did not have to do without the things we needed.
We honestly believed that we had the best dad in the world.
The pride and admiration that we feel for you right now are almost explosive.
No words can express the depths of our gratitude
and no tears can begin to express the depths of our loss.
Now that we have lost you in the physical form,
we will cling to you in spirit for the same guidance, support and love
that we know is still there.

Your Loving Children,
Gregory and Kaye

Mr. Adams is in a class all his own. He's a great teacher that he has shown.
He taught the students all that he knew, mixing in humor to get them through.
He had a way to give students ambition, calling them lawyers and even physicians.
He gave the hope all youngsters need to be a great adult and in life succeed.
He's talented in math, but not only there, for what made him great is that he really did care.
He took the time to always explain, when one needed help he always came.
Mr. Adams is truly one of the best, a man who has an edge on all the rest,
who understands as good parents do. He was a true friend to all whom he knew. - Judd Gibson

Mr. Adams, I deeply regret that I can not attend your retirement reception today due to previous commitment.
However, I cannot let this occasion go by without at least letting you know that
I am thinking of you and your wife during this special time in your lives.
Few teachers have had the impact on me that you did,
and seldom have I been as eager to learn as I was in your class.
Your devotion and cheerful manner of presenting the material has gone unmatched.
Please accept my authentic regret for my absence today and best wishes for the future.
It is time to reap the rewards that you have been due for so long. - David English

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Perhaps you prayed a prayer
or came to pay a call;
Perhaps you sent beautiful flowers,
if so, we saw them all.
Perhaps you sent or spoke kind words
as any friend would say
Perhaps you were not there at all
but just thought of us that day;
Perhaps you prepared some tasty dish
or maybe furnished a car;
Perhaps you rendered a service unseen
near at hand or from afar.
Whatever you did to console the heart
by word or deed or touch;
Whatever was the kindly part,
we thank you, oh, so very much.
May God Bless Each Of You.

TO THE FAMILY

The staff and management of Peoples Funeral Home are privileged to have served you
during the most sorrowful time of your life.
We know it's hard to understand why things happen as they do,
but keep the faith, and above all, the Lord will see you through.
No matter what the ups and downs, the tears will sometimes fall.
He is watching you and most of all; he will never let you fall.
Sometimes we think that all is lost, the burdens we must bear,
but through it all the love of God will always be right there.
